Movie Review: Batoru Rowaiaru/Battle Royale

My Big Fat Movie Review

Just Like Summer Camp...

...but with axes and guns. The premise of Battle Royale is very straight forward. Take a class of ninth graders and put them on an island, give each a different weapon and the last one alive wins! Why? Reality TV, bad economy or fascist government. In reality who cares when it gives a movie likes this an excuse to pack in so much mayhem and fun. The comedic effect of having fifteen year old Japanese school girls running around a jungle island bumping each other off is great, but even better is the acting. The actors do a great job of accurately portraying the psychological stress one would feel if faced with having to kill off classmates and friends. It's a great film, in short it has the feel and tension of The Lord of the Flies, but Japanese style.
