Xbox Live Game Review: DeathSpank

My Big Fat Xbox

Heroics Have Never Been So Hilarious

I played the demo for the second DeathSpank months ago, but never got around to really playing till now. I'm a third of the way through the first game and it's one of the most fun games I've played in a long time. DeathSpank deals up equal amounts of humor and juicy justice with off the wall humor, great one liners, dungeon crawling mayhem and fantastic assortment of weapons and armor. The game's comedy, including DeathSpanks voice, remind me a lot of the cartoon The Tick (1994-1997) with it's irreverent and bizarre sense of humor. Happily the game is also a pretty fantastic dungeon crawler. There's a bevy of weapons through out the game as well as armor and they all have varying stats and bonuses along with funny names and descriptions like Sword of Pointy Bits or the Chicken Cannon. Runes found through out the game will allow you to utilize the special attack of two weapons at once when you power up, dealing a devastating blow to your enemies. There's plenty of quests and they vary a lot so you don't get bored, most of course have a humorous element. The graphics and fighting animations are fantastic. The scenery varies widely and is color full and fun. You can play with a friend too who will play as Sparkles the Wizard. Sparkles may not have as much fun, since he doesn't get any goodies or stats, but he does get to help DeathSpank in his heroic efforts. All in all it's not only a game for your funny bone, but it wall also satisfy your lust for a good dungeon crawler until Diablo 3 comes out in spring 2055.
