Movie Review: Hopscotch (1980)

Fat Film Review

Who Can Be So Overtly Covert...

...CIA Man. I've seen way too many movies and trying to find something original and done well on Netflix is near impossible, but every now and then I stumble across a gem I've missed from years ago. Hopscotch is one of those films. Well written and intelligent comedy is always a rarity and Hopscotch delivers both. Walter Matthau plays a Miles Kendig an unassuming, but seasoned and very well trained CIA agent. Kendig runs into trouble with the CIA when he refuses to kill a spy from the other side who he has known for years. Burned by his overbearing and idiotic boss, Myserson (Ned Beatty), Kendig decides to strike back by writing a tell all book chapter by chapter and sending each to every major nation. Obviously the CIA, as well as the KGB, are not happy about his divulging classified and embarrassing material and it is decided Kendig must be eliminated. An international game of cat and mouse begins with Kendig always a step ahead. Walter Matthau does an amazing job of playing the experienced spy with a quirky sense of humor and a decidedly nonchalant attitude toward threats against his person. It's a well paced movie and keeps a good balance between the spy drama and the comedy. Being neither too serious or silly. Enjoy.
