Film Review: Zone 39 (1996)

Big Fat Film Review

In The Zone

This film isn't what I expected, in fact the description on the cover is somewhat wrong. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because it's actually a good film. Set in a future where a war in Australia has split the country into two factions the Federated Republics and the New Territories Union. After his wife dies Leo (Peter Phelps) is assigned to solitary outpost on the border, Zone 39. His assignment is to kill those crossing the border from the other side. His only companion is a lizard named Alfie and spying on the enemy outpost across the way. The real struggle and turmoil of the film is in Leo's own mind as he deals with the isolation and his wife's death. To cope he reads the former residents journals and takes increasing amounts of drugs. Soon hallucinations of his wife go from a comfort to being a torment as things in Zone 39 spiral out of control. There's a lot to this movie, more than I mentioned and the acting is good. It's a low budget film so don't expect great special effects and the props can be a bit cheesy at times, but overall it's the quality of the acting and the story that make this film worth watching.
