Film Review: Despicable Me (2010)

Big Fat Film Review

It's a Loathe Hate Relationship

Why? Because I Loathe Steve Carrell and Hate myself for loving this movie. Albeit it's not a great film because of Steve Carrell, I don't care what you say (fingers in ears, lalalalala), it's a great movie despite him. Carrell is an insufferable bore and a horrid one dimensional actor, who clearly thinks he's better than everybody else. The only reason The Office was good was because the actual talented actors around him took his sorry pathetic acting and using it as something they could work off of turned it into comedy, much like slapstick comedians do with a banana. Fortunatley this is a cartoon and we don't have to look at his stupid face and the character he plays, Gru, fits his one and only style of bland acting that he plays in everything. Okay I'll stop Carrell bashing at this point and talk about the film. I'm not one to let a crappy actor ruin a good thing for me and Despicable Me is one of those. Gru is out to defeat fellow evil villain Vector (Jason Segel) in a unofficial contest of who-can-pull-of-the-most-outrageous-crime, stealing the moon. As part of his plot Gru needs to adopt three orphans to pull off part of his plan, but in so doing sets himself to become a caring, loving father figure. Gru finds himself conflicted over the time he spends on his evil plan and the needs of the orphans leading to various and usually funny conflicts. Overall it's a good comedy with some heart strings attached. The animation is fluid and it's a fun movie for both kids and adults. My personal favorite about this movie is the Minions. The little yellow guys are constantly up to antics through out the movie and I'm pretty sure they don't like Carrell either.
