Tech Review: Sansa Fuze+ MP3 Player

Big Fat Tunes

Don't Blow a Fuze

My wife owns one of these and I've gotten play around with it a little. I've also gotten to toy around with the previous version of the Fuze and there's some definite upgrades with the Fuze+. First off its touchable. I don't mean it's soft and furry like a cat. It's got touch controls (not screen) instead of buttons like on the original version. It's a nice upgrade, but also the one draw back on the Fuze+. The controls are very responsive and by very I mean overly, too much and by more than just a little. For example when the Fuze+ is in it's soft case it's still possible to push the buttons just by setting it down or the slightest touch. Kind of annoying when you're in the middle of your favorite song, jamming out and errrk...the record skips to the next song. That said I and everyone else who owns a Fuze+ is waiting for a new firmware update to fix this. Until then a hard case (which you should have anyhow) and being a little extra careful solves the problem. If this turns you off right here and now look into the classic Fuze. It's a great MP3 players sans some of the features I'm about to talk about. Okay onto the good stuff. The Fuze+
supports more audio formats such as 16big Flac (no 24bit, but maybe with a firmware upgrade later). It also supports Ogg, AAC, and the usuals (i.e. MPE, WMA, etc.). The screen resolution and size are both better and bigger now and support MPEG-4, H.264, WMV and Flip. One charge gives you 24 hours of music playback and 5 hours of video playback. If you run out of room on your 4, 8, or 16gb Fuze+ you can also add and extra 32 gigs with the microSD slot. The Fuze+ also supports slotRadio and slotMusic cards. The digital FM tuner works great and allows you to play, pause and record radio. All in all a great MP3 player. Again if the sensitive touch pad makes you leery wait for an official firmware update before you buy or go with the original Fuze.
