Big Fat Film Review
Don't Laugh Yet
If you're dude, like me, you probably skipped right past this movie in Netflix because it looks like a total chick flick. Even IMDB calls it a comedy-romance. It's most assuredly a comedy and yes there's a little romance, but mostly it's comedy and the good kind. The kind where you laugh throughout the entire film instead of once and then feeling sad. This movies is also not a high school girl drama film either, the main character even makes a statement to such at the beginning of the movie. Easy-A fits into the comedy genre of real-life-would-be-funny-if-we-just-did-what-we-felt-like-doing-and-saying. Unlikely, but plausible and always great for a movie. The film is about high school teen Olive (Emma Stone) who (suspension of belief here) is not popular and can't seem to get a boyfriend (tear). By accident, at first, Emma perpetuates a rumor that she is the school Huzzy (definition: a woman of ill repute who engages in promiscuous sexual intercourse, usually for money; prostitute; harlot; strumpet). By fanning the flames of gossip she becomes one the most popular and talked about people in her school. More importantly she gets to pretend to be something she's not and escape her mundane life (assuredly because shes so plain and unattractive). Through her adventure she begins to help others and perpetuate rumors for the unlikeable and ugly to help raise their social status or keep them out of trouble. All the time she's harangued by a group of uptight religious zealots led by Marianne (Amanda Bynes) who thoroughly loath her, but are obviously and transparently jealous of her supposed candor. Ultimately, as with all well laid plans, things unravel comically and illuminatingly. It's a very fun movie and solid story. My wife and son also found this movie very entertaining. Summation: Everyone should laugh more and so accordingly you should see this film.
