Army of Two: The 40th Day - Xbox 360 Review

My Big Fat Game Review

Twice the game or half what you expected?

If you played the first Army of Two you were probably pretty excited about the sequel. There was a lot of hype around Army of Two: The 40th Day involving more weapons and more customization of the weapons. Weapon parts are interchangeable between guns and there are a lot more types of camouflage. There is also the addition of a morality system based on decisions made in the game such as rescuing hostages, sparing guards lives and more. Sadly the game was half what I expected. It all sounds very exciting, but in reality it's less than expected. All though you can interchange the gun parts and thus make a wide variety of custom guns there just isn't enough variability in the parts. For example there are only three secondary weapons, all pistols, and they can barely be modified. There is also only one light machine gun, where as the first game had three. Hopefully with future DLC there will be an addition of weapons and weapon parts. The other strange thing about the game is the morality system. Many times in the game when you make the "right decision" bad stuff still happens to the characters you spare. Also you have to play the game twice to get access to all the weapons, since access to some guns is limited by your moral decisions. It's a very thin premise to play the game a second time. A couple of things I really liked about the game was the addition of custom masks (which you create at EA online and upload to the game) and also all the new camo types for the guns. Camo such as Zebra, Jigsaw, Skulls, etc. are very cool. Finally even on the hardest mode the entire game can be finished in one day. The boss fights are not varied much at all and what should be a final boss fight turns out to be a morality decision instead which is just kind of lame. Overall although I would recommend you save your pennies and just play the first game again and wait till you can buy the sequel used.
