Film Review: Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

Big Fat Film Review

The Short Answer...

...of course it's good it's a Wes Anderson film stupid.  Still not convinced?  If I told you it has some great performances by Edward Norton, Bruce Willis and Bill Murray would that help.  If that's not enough for you to go see it then go ahead keep reading.  Moonrise Kingdom is a touching and heartfelt comedy that will appeal to anyone, but especially for those of us that were the weird kid growing up.  The story follows two misfit kids Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward) who understand each other when no one else around can seem to figure them out.  Their youthful crush turns into an awkward, sweet and at times bitter love story when they decide to seek out adventure and leave behind those who don't understand them.  These two young actors are great at expressing the confusion of understanding oneself at an age where everything can seem emotionally overwhelming.  It's okay to cry during those scenes of the film, I promise I won't tell.  The story is expertly woven, along with the smaller stories that exist.  Such as an emotionally bankrupt marriage, an affair, and an abusive wife (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand).  Bruce Willis expertly plays the small island's only cop who seems so very sad, yet at the same time has a silent and steadfast perseverance that preserves his soul and ultimately unleashes a hero.  Edward Norton also shines as a part time scout leader who considers it his full time job to run his group of idiosyncratic scouts as if they were a true military unit.  The film is chock full of humorous moments just as much as it is filled with those subtle and gentle understandings of the fragile human condition.  All in all a superb film and definitely in my top 100.  Enjoy.
